Melbourne Victory are reportedly on the verge of signing former Chelsea star Michael Essien.

The Herald Sun reports that Essien is close to finalising negotiations to join the three-time A-League champions, after the FFA approved the signing under the league's new guest marquee rule.

The FFA confirmed on Wednesday night that an A-League club has made a submission to sign Essien.

The 33-year-old made 168 appearances for Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cup titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Essien has also had stints at AC Milan, Real Madrid and Lyon.

He has been capped 58 times by Ghana.
