MARTIN GUPTLL: D

Martin Guptill recorded two agonisingly dull innings of 23 and 23, with strike rates of 39 and 17.

Despite taking one catch in the field, this says it all really. Guptil never got going on a batting friendly wicket and ultimately failed each time out in his mission of getting his nation off to a good start.

TOM LATHAM: C-

The better of the two openers (not saying much), Tom Latham looked like he was off to a good start in his first innings before losing his wicket to Nathan Lyon in disappointing fashion.

Got off to another fast start in his second, hitting three fours and one six before getting one on the pads from Mitchell Starc.

KANE WILLIAMSON: A+

The only Kiwi who did his job in both innings, Kane Williamson again affirmed himself as New Zealand's best batsman, managing a brave 140 in the first innings and 59 in the second.

Williamson also chimed in with one wicket in his part-time spinning role, which is ironically better than some of his full-time bowling compatriots managed.

ROSS TAYLOR: F

Supposedly one of the Kiwi's better batsmen, Ross Taylor may as well not have shown up to the Gabba. He probably would have had more impact on the game cheering from his couch at home.

Taylor managed innings of 26 and naught, and for a top-order batsman, that is simply not good enough.

BRENDAN MCCULLUM: C

Despite being non-existent in the first innings, Brendan McCullum's second innings saw him hit a brilliant 80, before it was controversially ended when the Black Caps' skipper found himself having used up all his reviews.

Had he shown up in the first innings, he may have gotten a higher grade here. However, playing half a Test match warrants no more than a C, especially from a captain.

JAMES NEESHAM: F

James Neesham, in the side for his dual batting and bowling abilities, managed to bring neither to Brisbane, recording six runs all match and taking only one wicket.

Granted his wicket of David Warner on 163 was a good one, it was too little, way too late for New Zealand.

BJ WATLING: D

BJ Watling was just another New Zealander who was barely sighted all match, with both the bat and in the field.

He was shown up by his opposite number Peter Nevill, and his scores of 32 and 14 meant he didn't contribute with the bat either.

MARK CRAIG: C+

Mark Craig had a horror first innings with the ball, managing no wickets for 156 runs, but turned things around in the second, taking a respectable 3-78.

Despite it not being his job, Craig also managed the fourth most runs of any Black Cap in the match, with scores of 24 and 26 โ€“ scary stuff.

DOUG BRACEWELL: F

Bowler Doug Bracewell took one wicket and scored 16 runs all match.

End of story.

TIM SOUTHEE: D-

Despite Tim Southee also having little to no impact on the match like the rest of the Kiwi attack, Southee escapes an F because of his nagging injury problems.

TRENT BOULT: F

While his teammate Tim Southee may have escaped an F, Trent Boult unfortunately cannot.

One wicket in each innings from the team's best bowler is nowhere near good enough.
