England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has made a late play for a spot in this year's Ashes series.

The Yorkshire spinner recorded figures of 4-55 in the first ODI against New Zealand at Edgbaston.

The 27-year-old has taken 392 first-class wickets in 134 matches and has taken 11 wickets at an average of 21.72 in two County Championship matches this season.

Rashid may be a viable options come the Ashes, with former captain Nasser Hussain not convinced with England's current spin options.

โ€œIt's astounding that England are expecting their spinner to learn his art in international cricket,โ€ Hussain said in the Daily Mail.

โ€œMoeen (Ali) could end up as an excellent spinner, as we saw against India, but he is a batsman who bowls spin.

โ€œIt's a sad state of affairs that the cupboard looks bare of spinners good enough for England.โ€

The first Test starts on July 8 in cardiff.
