Spanish second division player Jesus de Miguel has died after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper, Jesus Owono.
The collision happened seven minutes into stoppage time when de Miguel chased a clearance ball, with goalkeeper Owono collecting him in the chest with his knee at high speed.
Owono was given a straight red card for the incident, while players from both sides frantically signalled for the medical staff to attend to de Miguel.
The striker suffered a cardiac arrest on the field, and - after more than five minutes of CPR - the medical team was able to resuscitate him and rushed him to hospital.
Unfortunately, his neurological condition worsened overnight, and it was later confirmed by his club, Tenerife, that he had passed away.
“No words can ease the pain, nothing can lessen this great feeling of sadness,” said the club via a statement.
“Our thoughts are with the family, his close friends and Tenerife fans, who today are grieving over this terrible news.”
After hearing this horrific news, star athletes worldwide offered their condolences.
“There are no words... rest in peace,” wrote Argentinian legend, Lionel Messi, on social media.

"Deeply sad. There are no words. Rest in peace," wrote French star, Kylian Mbappe, on an Instagram story.
Spain's National Police have opened an investigation into the incident, with the possibility of an involuntary manslaughter charge. Under Spanish law, all unnatural and accidental deaths must be investigated.
The Spanish Football Federation is in discussions with Tenerife to postpone their next two games, as they grieve their players' death.
The match was abandoned with the score level at 2-2.
