As the NBA preseason is coming to a close, a surprising group of familiar names still find themselves without teams.

In a league that never stops moving forward, experienced players and former lottery picks alike are facing uncertain futures as the 2025–26 season approaches.

At the top of that list is Russell Westbrook, a former MVP and one of the most dynamic guards of his generation.

Once synonymous with relentless energy and triple-doubles, Westbrook now stands on the outside looking in, a reality few would have predicted even a year ago.

Westbrook opted out of his $3.4 million player option with the Denver Nuggets in the offseason, reportedly in search of a better opportunity and a larger role.

Months later, that move has yet to pay off. He remains an unrestricted free agent.

According to ESPN, joining Westbrook in free agency are Ben Simmons, Victor Oladipo, and DeAndre Jordan, each navigating different paths through injury setbacks and changing roles.

Younger players like Markelle Fultz, Talen Horton-Tucker, Bol Bol, and Mac McClung also remain unsigned, their once-promising trajectories clouded by inconsistency and timing.

As teams trim rosters and finalise rotations, these players wait for one more chance to prove they still belong.

For some, it could be a final act.

For others, it might be the spark before a comeback.
