Toby Price has become the first Australian to win the Dakar Rally, clinching victory with a fourth place finish on the final stage.
Price's winning margin over second placed Stefan Svitko was a fraction under 40 minutes after a total of 48 hours of racing through Argentina and Bolivia over the last fortnight.
The 28-year-old, hailing from the Hunter region in New South Wales, assumed the lead of the event on the eighth of 13 stages, staving off and outlasting the challenge of Honda rivals Joan Barreda and Paulo Goncalves.
Stephane Peterhansel clinched a remarkable 12th overall Dakar victory in the car category, but his victory for Peugeot remains provisional after a protest lodged by a rival Mini team.
