Australia has named their squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh, with one glaring omission from their most recent tour of India.

While all the batsman retain their spot, veteran spinner Steve O'Keefe has been left out of the tour, with captain Steve Smith citing a view on the 2021 Indian tour as the reason for O'Keefe's axing.

As a result, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson have been included along side Hilton Cartwright while Jackson Bird is likely to join the XI with Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson on the sidelines through injury.

While Smith declined to admit that O'Keefe's test career was over, he did say that the 32-year-old was understandably disappointed with the call.

"I thought the first Test in India he bowled particularly well and at times throughout the series he bowled well without taking the wickets we would have liked," Smith told cricket.com.au.

"I have (spoken to O'Keefe) and he was disappointed, which is fair enough. He understands where we're heading.

"He's getting a bit older now and our next tour back to India is in four years' time and we've got to find the right group of guys that are going to be there for that series.

O'Keefe's match haul of 12-70 in Pune, the best-ever figures by a foreign spinner in India, led Australia to a win in the city's first test match.

Ashton Agar is now presumably next in line to claim the mantle as Australia's premier spinner, although Mitchell Swepson's rise through the domestic ranks has not gone unnoticed by selectors.

"(Agar) has been around for a while now and it's another chance for him to have a crack in spin-friendly conditions and hopefully he can go really well for us," Smith said.

Smith acknowledged the pressure will be on his side when they travel to the sub continent for the second time in 2017.

“I think there's always been an expectation there of the Australian team delivering, I don't think that's ever not been the case,” Smith told Fox Sports.

“We hold our heads high and we want to play some really good cricket in this series and in India in the one dayers and then in the Ashes in the summer.

“I'm really excited about the upcoming tour to Bangladesh. It's going to be a big challenge for this group. We obviously played in India recently in somewhat similar conditions … hopefully we can learn from those mistakes and have a bit more success in Bangladesh.”
