Australian Diamonds defender Sarah Klau has been handed a $5000 fine and a two-match suspension following an investigation into an off-court assault earlier this year.

Netball Australia confirmed on Thursday that it completed its investigation into the NSW Swifts defender under its Integrity Framework after Klau pleaded guilty to a common assault charge stemming from an incident on June 7.

The court matter was dismissed on September 3.

Despite avoiding a conviction, Netball Australia found Klau had breached its Code of Conduct by failing to behave professionally in public and engaging in conduct that did, or could, bring Netball, Netball Australia or the NSW Swifts into disrepute.

The sanction includes a $5000 fine and a two-match suspension, with the suspension wholly suspended for 12 months.

As a result, the defender will not miss any matches immediately, but the two-game suspension will be activated if she commits another Code of Conduct breach during the next 12 months.

The 31-year-old will also be required to complete additional education and has received a formal reprimand from Netball Australia.

Netball Australia's chief executive Mark Falvo commented on the seriousness of the incident.

"We expect our athletes to demonstrate safe, respectful and professional behaviour both on and off the court," Falvo said.

"On this occasion, Sarah's conduct represented a significant but momentary lapse in judgement, and one that has been mitigated by her otherwise excellent character and behavioural history.

"We also acknowledge that Sarah has expressed genuine remorse for her actions and has recommitted to the high standards expected of our athletes."

Klau apologised for her actions in a statement posted by the NSW Swifts.

“I am incredibly sorry for my actions and I take full responsibility for my behaviour," Klau said.

“I am committed to learning from this and ensuring my actions reflect the standards expected of me and our sport.

“I am grateful for the support I have received. I care deeply about netball and the values it represents.”

The incident occurred outside a Sydney venue on June 7, with Klau later pleading guilty to common assault after being accused of kicking a security guard, which was reported by Code Sports. 
The event took place shortly before the Diamonds travelled to Glasglow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where Klau was part of Australia's Bronze medal winning squad.

According to 7NEWS, Netball Australia and Commonwealth Games Australia were not informed of the incident before Klau played with the Diamonds.

With the suspension wholly suspended, Klau remains eligible for selection for Australia's upcoming Constellation Cup series against New Zealand.
