British Honda rider Cal Crutchlow has stormed to victory in the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island, ahead of fan favourite Valentino Rossi.

Crutchlow claimed his second MotoGP victory after race favourite and 2016 champion Marc Marquez crashed out after nine laps.

Marquez had been clearing away from the field and a win seemed a formality until he slid off at Turn 4, his bike cartwheeling into the gravel.

Crutchlow held his nerve as Rossi loomed. The Italian veteran had charged through the field after starting from 15th on the gird - his worst qualification in five years.

Suzuki factory rider Maverick Vinales was third after starting from 13th on the grid.
