The NSW government has introduced tough new punishments for anti-social behaviour at sporting events.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that the NSW government has already amended laws to deal with the misuse of flares.
Convicted fans face increased fines and at worst even jail time. The news laws mirror those levied in Victoria.
“The NSW Government amended the Crimes Act last year to address the misuse of flares at sporting events,” a spokesperson told the Telegraph.
“These changes clarified that the offence of discharging a distress flare in public without a reasonable excuse applies to both flares that emit smoke and flares that emit a bright light, usually through ignition.
“The offence is punishable by two years' imprisonment and/or a fine of $5,000.”
