Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has taken a remarkable triple race victory, winning the first three races since the teams resumed racing action after their summer vacation. He took the win in Belgium, Italy and then a a surprise victory in Singapore, a race where he qualified on the third row of the grid and was expecting to fight for a podium finish at best.
Instead, the three drivers in front of him all crashed into each other, leaving the path clear for the Brit to take to the lead where he remained until the end of the race two hours later.
This means that he now has a 28-point advantage over his main title rival, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, but Lewis has admitted he isn't focusing on the bigger picture, instead, he's taking the rest of the season one step at a time, starting with this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix.
"Not for a second am I thinking about that [the Championship]," he said. "I've just been taking the races one at a time. It doesn't matter to me when it happens. For me, it is making sure I have won it when I cross the line at the end of the season. That's what matters.”
"I'm not really reflecting too much on the last race. I woke up that morning anticipating the difficulty of overtaking at that circuit and thinking I would lose a good 10 or 15 points to Sebastian."
"So, to come out of it the other way round was obviously a surprise. However, I do still feel like my state of mind is exactly the same as it was before. Of course, it is a part of a turning point on the season when you are coming from behind all season long and now you are leading the Championship. I just have to make sure that was the last time."
