One of Australia's biggest Autumn Racing carnival events will see the annual running of the Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick on Saturday, April 6.

The race - the eighth of the day - is set to get underway at 4:35pm (AEDT).

The Doncaster Mile - registered as the Doncaster Handicap - is one of Australia's longest running races, having first been contested in 1866.

Run over a distance of 1600 metres, the race is a handicap event for horses three years and older with a minimum of 49 kilograms, and holds a $4,000,000 purse.

The winner of the race also goes straight into the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Stakes, to be held next weekend.

Fan favourite Mr Brightside is the two-time defending champion, but will not be back to defend the crown, with Another Wil (18) currently the favourite (correct at 12pm (AEDT), Friday April 5).

The track is expected to be heavy by the time the race gets underway, with Sydney being hit by a deluge of rain in the 24 hours leading up to race time.

It's a big day of racing at Randwick, with the Doncaster Mile joined by another four Group 1 races, being the T J Smith Stakes, Australian Derby, Sire Produce Stakes and Country Championships Final.
