Newcastle have earned a valuable point against top four contenders Manchester City in a match that was marred with controversy finishing 1-1 at St James Park to give them some hope of getting out of the drop zone and assuring themselves of Premier League football next season.

It didn't take long for Manuel Pellegrini's side to get into their groove - fresh off a resounding 3-0 win over Chelsea on the weekend - with Sergio Aguero notching his 100th Premier League goal flicking in Aleksandar Kolarov's cross with a well timed header 14 minutes in. However, Aguero appeared to be offside, but his goal stood.

The Baggies responded on the half-hour mark through Dutch midfielder Vernon Antia who's low curling left-foot shot was just out of reach for City keeper Joe Hart. Towards the end of the game, City had great chances through Jesus Navas and in-form midfielder Kevin De Bruyne who's shots were both saved by Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow.

Georginio Wijnaldum had a great chance of his own that was well saved from England's no.1 Joe Hart. With the draw, Newcastle remain in the bottom three, a point behind archrivals Sunderland - who have a game in hand - and two behind Norwich who sit just outside the drop zone.

Whether manager Rafael Benitez can now maintain his side's improvement and steer them to safety in their final four games - which are against Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Tottenham - remains to be seen. Manchester City meanwhile have opened the door for Arsenal to replace them in third and rivals Manchester United in the top four. City's remaining games see them play Stoke, Southampton, Arsenal and Swansea with their focus now purely on the Champions League and their semi-final matchup with Real Madrid.
