Melbourne City is reportedly making a serious play to bring Tim Cahill to the A-League as the club's marquee player for the 2016-17 season.

The Australian has reported that that City are determined to lure Cahill to Melbourne, in what is seen as key to improving the club's poor attendances.

City will reportedly need to offer the Socceroos star a deal between $2 to $3 million to secure the 36-year-old's signature.

Cahill has one month left to run on his current six-month contract with Chinese Super League club Hangzhou Greentown.

The A-League club is likely to face tough competition for Cahill from a number of Chinese Super League.
