Steve Smith has made an interesting career move, joining the likes of tennis star Nick Kyrigos to invest in a fast-growing sport.

The Australian batter has decided to invest and secure ownership in the Major League Pickleball Australian team 'Sydney Smash' - a term synonymous with cricket fans when the Sydney Sixers face the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.

The surprising career decision by Smith came after he revealed he was drawn to the sport and its ability to connect a wide range of people in different ages.

"I was drawn to pickleball for its incredible power to connect people," Smith said.

"With the Sydney Smash, I hope to bring my experience in professional sports to help support the team and elevate the sport."

Pickleball is played with paddles and combines tennis, badminton and ping pong.

It is also regarded as one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide, with the sport earning television rights and numerous athletes competing in pickleball events around the world.

"Steve's engagement with the Sydney Smash is a game-changer for pickleball in Australia and beyond," CEO of Major League Pickleball Australia Adam Thompson said.

"His vision and expertise are invaluable assets that will significantly boost the sport's national and international presence."
