Russian-born Australian Daria Gavrilova has stunned world No.6 and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Australian Open.

Gavrilova, currently ranked No.39 in the world, had her serve broken early in the first set, before, regrouping and breaking Kvitova's serve twice to take the set 6-4.

Gavrilova then raced to a 5-2 lead in the second set, with some brilliant shot making and aggressive tennis, making the former world No.2 scramble around the court.

The 21-year-old Australian had a match point at 5-3, before nerves got the better of her and she made three unforced errors to hand Kvitova the game.

Kvitova managed to save one more match point at 5-4, before Gavroliva managed to hold her nerve and close out the match on her third match point to claim the biggest win of her career.

She now faces Kristina Mladenovic in the third round.
