An apparently serious knee injury to San Francisco running back Reggie Bush and the sight of Mike Davis leaving the field could open the door for Jarryd Hayne to return to the 49ers after he was dumped from the squad on Sunday.

Bush immediately went down in pain after injuring his knee off the first punt of the game. He ran across the field for a gain, before jogging over the sideline before slipping on the concrete.

He was taken from the field and did not return for the rest of the game. There were fears Bush had suffered a torn ACL - an injury that could potentially be career-ending.

But a game-ending hand injury to another running back in Mike Davis - on top of Carlos Hyde's foot fracture which has ruled him out until after the week-10 bye - means Jim Tomsula's team are down a total of three running backs. The only fit running back is Hayne's replacement, Kendall Gaskins, which is a major concern for a depleted 49ers outfit a day after Hayne was sensationally dumped from their roster.

Hayne's fate is likely to be known on Monday (Tuesday, Sydney time) when it is expected to be revealed if another NFL team has picked him up, or if not, whether the 49ers have signed him to their practice squad.
