Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey has thoroughly enjoyed his Test debut in Brisbane, with Austalia on the verge of claiming victory at Gabba on day four of the opening clash of the Ashes.

Despite amassing just the 12 runs with bat-in-hand in his first innings at the crease, the South Australian gloveman has found life behind the stumps much easier.

In claiming the catch off Chris Woakes' edge and concluding England's second innings score, Carey set a Test record for most catches on debut, totalling eight across the match.

Dismissals of Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler and Ollie Robinson in the first innings had Carey in good stead and shaking off any early nerves in his maiden Test as Australia limited the tourists to just 147.

Carey then saw similar success with the gloves in the second innings despite England amassing a greater total to record a positive deficit of 19 runs before being all out for 297.

The wickets of Haseeb Hameed, Rory Burns, Joe Root, Buttler and Woakes were all collected in Carey's gloves, recording a new feat in the history books.

The record surpasses the seven catches total previously set by Chris Read, Brian Taber, Chamara Dunusinghe, Rishabh Pant, Peter Nevill and Alan Knott.

Carey also equalled the record of most dismissals in a Test debut, levelling with Taber and Read.
