The Townsville 400 proved to be a challenging weekend for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, who took to the street circuit with new driver Aaren Russell behind the wheel of their second car.
After an extended period away from the series Russell was a late signing to take charge of the #3 LDM Commodore. Also coming along for the ride was Plus Fitness, a long time supporter of Russell's racing career.
“It was defiantly a shock to the system, it was pretty tough but I physically feel better after getting out of the car,” said Russell. “It was good to get back behind the wheel, and be able to make the changes and see whether we progress or go backwards. Unfortunately, the weekend just didn't pan out the way we wanted too.”
The youngest Driver in the field, teammate Alex Rullo was looking forward to returning to the streets of Townsville, having competed at the circuit in the Super 2 series last season. He gained a lot of media attention from his Queensland fan base and loved returning to the circuit…
“The fans and the area. There's so much to do around here and there's some great weather too,” he said. “The round attracts a variety of fans from areas around here and Australia, the championship has a great Queensland fan base.”
Alex was content with the outcome of the weekend, with the two 200km races showing a positive improvement to his tyre wear management.
“I managed the tyres a lot better throughout the races and tried different techniques to keep posting competitive times whilst taking care of the tyres. Overall the car was great on the entry to the corner but I struggled mid-corner for grip. We lost a little bit of time in the pit stop but other than that is was a relatively mistake free race.”
The team will be back in action for the next round at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich on July 27.
