Melbourne City defender Connor Chapman says his side will hit top form come finals time.

City, known for their inconsistency throughout their short history in the A-League, have recorded two 5-1 victories in a row, showing that this season, they may finally be the real deal.

Defender Chapman believes City are hitting their straps at the perfect time and will be in great touch heading into finals.

"I don't think you want to be hitting your form in the first six weeks of the league," he said.

"I think we're still going to hit our [best] form in a few weeks or hopefully, even, to the end of the (season). You want to have a roll at that time and you want to time it perfectly for the finals."

The 21-year-old also said that despite the club's recent big wins, the team needs to focus on keeping a clean sheet.

"I think we've got to be a bit smarter that if we do score goals then defensively we have to be a bit stronger," Chapman said.

"It's a massive thing that we would have liked but I think JVS has said before; it's not just defenders, it's the whole shape and we're definitely working on that.

"I think when we get that right we'll be pretty hard to beat."

City take on Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium on Sunday evening.
