After the news that Fernando Alonso would not be taking part in the 2017 Monaco Grnad Prix due to the fact that he is planning to contest the Indianapolis 500 instead, thoughts turn to who would be taking his place in the second Honda powered McLaren around the streets of the Principality.
One driver comes instantly to mind, Jenson Button.
The return of Button for a one off race seems the most feasible as he is still contracted to the Woking based squad and while his official role is that of Ambassador, he made no secret of the fact that 2017 was simply a sabbatical and that he was looking forward to return to an active racing role.
Whether or not he has kept his training up and is physically capable of contesting a one off race is another story, but then that would apply to any driver that the team opted to call in for this very rare opportunity.
McLaren officials refuse to comment on who will take Fernando's place at this point in time, so all we can really do right now is speculate, but remember, even the impossible becomes possible in Formula One, just look at the Williams with retired Brazilian driver Felipe Massa behind the wheel for proof of that.
