Red cards, synonymous with other sports such as football, could be introduced to cricket at all levels, as early as next year.
The MCC World Cricket Committee met in India this week and made a number of recommendations, including implementing a send off rule for serious disciplinary breaches.
If the recommendation is approved, players could be ejected from the game for the following reasons:
- Threatening an umpire
- Physically assaulting another player, umpire, official or spectator
- Any other act of violence on the field of play
Committee member Ricky Ponting said it is important to implement stricter rules around poor behaviour.
“It's got to the state where something had to happen to prevent those things happening on the international stage,” Ponting said.
“The modern player now understands their role in society, about being role models and want to play the game the right way for younger kids.”
The Committee also determined that limitations to the sizes of cricket bats should be introduced to the laws of the game.
