England will be hoping paceman Ollie Robinson can return to the attack for the coming days of the Hobart Test after suffering a back spasm on Friday.

After claiming the wickets of David Warner and Steve Smith in the early moments of the opening session of day one at Bellerive Oval, Robinson was rested following just the eight overs, with his figures reading 2/24.

The 28-year-old is now set to remain out of England's bowling attack for the opening session of day two, however Robinson is tipped to take to the field.

Speaking to media after the first day in Tasmania, England blowing coach Jon Lewis revealed a returning timeline is unknown for Robinson.

"At the moment, from what I gather, he has a back spasm," Lewis said.

"Those things can come and go. We're hoping with treatment overnight ... he can be free enough to bowl."

After being rested for the fourth Test in Sydney, Robinson was confident in his fitnes levels to feature for the final match of the Ashes series.

Despite getting the all-clear, Robinson's fitness remains to be an existing issue for Lewis to deal with.

"It's something he needs to improve. He's got a record of playing a lot of games of county cricket," Lewis said.

"Playing international cricket is a higher intensity and you play all year around. He's got to get used to understanding what it takes to be a full-time, year-round international cricketer.

"In the times we're in, everything is really squashed together. There's not a great deal of rest and recuperation between games.

"That's something he is going to have to deal with. It is one of his things he really needs to work on."

Australia ended the opening day in Hobart at 6/241 after 59.3 overs, with the second day set to begin at 2:30pm AEDT following rain delays from Friday's sessions.
