The FIA, Formula One's governing body, has revealed that they are planning to go with front ‘shield' protection device rather than the ‘halo' that teams have been testing over the past twelve months.
During a meeting of the F1 Strategy Group and F1 Commission in Paris on Tuesday, they decided that the concept they presented during the recent Chinese Grand Prix was a better alternative to the halo system as it consists of a see through screen and does not cover the entire cockpit.
Track testing on this new concept will be carried out over the course of the 2017 season.
"A number of more integrated solutions for additional frontal protection have been studied, and the decision has been taken to give priority to the transparent ‘shield' family of systems. The FIA aims to carry out track tests of this system during this season in preparation for implementation in 2018,” they said in a statement.
