Jarryd Hayne has been gifted an NFL career lifeline after just one week benched, with the Aussie to return for the 49ers due to an injury to teammate Carlos Hyde.

Hyde, San Francisco's No.1 running back, has been struggling with a stress fracture in his foot. Niners medical staff have decided he should be rested, with speculation he may miss the next two games against St Louis and Atlanta, then return after a bye on November 22 (US time) to face Seattle.

Hayne, who was benched for the first time in his NFL career when the 49ers faced the Seahawks last start, will now suit up on Monday (AEDT) against the St Louis Rams, according to veteran 49ers beat writer Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

He would be one of three running backs along with veteran Reggie Bush and fellow rookie Mike Davis. The Aussie appears to now have games against the Rams and Falcons to impress coaches in a bid to keep his NFL career moving forward.
