Fans and commentators alike were a little confused when they saw the way Sebastian Vettel had lined his Ferrari up on the starting grid for the Chinese Grand prix. Drivers are all given lines on the grid corresponding with their qualifying positions and are meant to line up inside their ‘box' per se.
However, when all the cars where on the grid in China, Vettel's Ferrari was only half in his allocated ‘box' while the other half was moved quite visibly toward pole sitter Lewis Hamilton.
The stewards investigated this manoeuvre early in the race and the Ferrari driver was cleared of any wrong doing. As Seb explained afterwards, the reason for the move toward the centre of the track was not to gain any advantage, instead he was just trying to make sure he was way from the water on that side of the track so he could get the best start possible.
Now however, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner, has called for some form of clarity around exactly where the drivers must, or mustn't be on the starting grid….
“I think the one thing that would be nice to come out of it is, because it was obvious what he was trying to do, get to the drier part of the track which you can understand , but it would be good to have clarity of does a driver have to start in his grid box or not? Is it just a line or is it a box? I remember it being discussed, but he got no advantage from it. It would just be good to have clarity.”
