Channel Nine commentator and former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has come under fire for a comment he made during the coverage of the first Test of the summer on Monday.

While 21-year-old South African Kagiso Rabada tore through the Australian batting line-up, Chappell attempted to heap praise on the young quick.

However, while trying to compliment Rabada, Chappell also offended viewers, when fellow commentator Ian Healy asked Chappell how Rabada could have developed such speed at such a young age.

“You'd have to ask all the batsman in his village,” Chappell replied.

His comments infuriated viewers, with Rabada growing up in Johannesburg and attending the prestigious St Stithians Boys College, while his father is a neurosurgeon and his mother a lawyer.

Rabada finished with figures of 5-92 in the fourth innings, as South Africa recorded a 177-run win over Australia. He claimed seven wickets for the Test and was awarded man of the match.
