Football Australia has announced the appointment of new Matildas head coach Joe Montemurro after parting ways with Tony Gustavsson in August.
Montemurro has spent the last 10 years coaching across Europe with an impressive resume, having coached teams such as Arsenal WFC, Juventus FC Women, and Olympique Lyonnais Fรฉminin.
There is a busy schedule for the Matildas over the next three years with the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2026, the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil in 2027 and the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
The Melbourne-born coach will be returning home when he heads the Matildas squad. He began his coaching career at Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC. During the 2015/16 season, Montemurro coached City to a championship in the A-League Women competition, going undefeated on the season.
The success continued then on for Monetmurro as he coached the Arsenal's Women's Team to victory in the Women's Super League during the 2018/19 season, Juventus Women to a Serie A in the 2021/22 season and then the league title in France for 2024/25 season while in charge of Olympique Lyon.
Monetmurro will commence his role officially on the 16th of June in preparation for the June/July FIFA Women's International Window, as the squad looks to regain some form ahead of the upcoming Asian Cup, which will take place in Australia next year.
The Matildas sent off interim head coach Tom Sermanni with a 4-1 win over Argentina in a friendly match on Monday night.
