Max Verstappen topped the timesheets in the opening 90 minute free practice session here at the Shanghai International Circuit oin China this morning, the Red Bull Racing driver one of a handful of drivers who actually took to the circuit due to the appalling weather conditions.

Even though there was no rain falling through the session, the track was wet from overnight rain so several drivers who braved the intermediate rubber soon found themselves in the gravel. However, the main problem was that the weather conditions forced the local airport to close, meaning the official FIA helicopter was unable to operate.

Safely is paramount at all races and if the helicopter was unable to land then they couldn't take the chance that a driver had an accident and was unable to recive the medical attention he needed.

Hopefully the situation will be a lot clearer for FP2 later this afternoon.
