Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyon says the city should be home to a Big Bash team and should also eventually host Test matches.

Lyons said he is staggered that Geelong does not already have a team in the Big Bash competition.

Simonds Stadium hosted a practice match on the weekend between the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades, which drew a crowd of around 10,000 people.

“Well I've been working very hard on this for a couple of years and would like to see Simonds Stadium not only used for AFL but concerts and cricket,” Lyons said on SEN radio.

“The crowd was just so excited and I got mobbed with so many thankyous for getting this to happen.

“I reckon there should be a Geelong Cats side.

“We're putting another $90 million into our stadium down there and to have a practice game with 10,000 people with families and kids was just electric.

“Everyone's talking about taking the Test down to Canberra, well the pollies can fly their helicopters down to Geelong I don't mind.

“It's a no-brainer to offer memberships through the AFL and Geelong is the place to be playing Test cricket and BBL.

“We'll get 30,000 plus – you could bring down one of the teams from Melbourne.”
