Lewis Hamilton's previous five wins at the Hungaroring make him the record winner on this particular track.
However, the three-time world champion was to miss out on the podium in the last race before the summer break, crossing the line in fourth place behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
For the Finn, it was a first Top Three finish in Hungary and the 17th of his F1 career.
"It was really tricky. The pace was not so much a problem. But once you get within 1.5 seconds to the car in front of you it becomes so difficult to close the gap," Valtteri explained. "And that track position was a big benefit for Ferrari. Even though Sebastian was struggling, no-one could pass him."
"We tried as a team to swap positions, but Lewis couldn't get past them either. We didn't gain any points but I'm glad we tried it. I was promised that Lewis would let me back if it didn't work out."
"I was struggling with the back markers so the gap to Lewis became bigger than I wanted. But Lewis and the team kept their promise and we swapped positions back in the last lap."
"I don't think every team-mate would do that in a championship fight, so I think that was really nice of him and it shows that he is a real team player. Our situations still is not too bad with regards to the points and the championship standing. Lewis and me are still in the fight."
Valtteri's third place was also the 19th podium at this venue for the driver of a Mercedes-powered car.
After testing finishing here this afternoon, Formula 1 will embark on its annual compulsory summer break, therefore, it is time for Mercedes to draw up an interim report.
After eleven of the 20 races in the 2017 season, Mercedes are the only team to have both of their drivers lift at least one winner's trophy.
Lewis and Sebastian Vettel are top of this particular class with four wins each.
Two other victories went to Valtteri.
Mercedes has more wins than any other team (six) - two more than Ferrari.
Lewis is the undisputed 'King of the Pole' at this stage: he has started from P1 in six out of eleven races.
Valtteri claimed a further two pole positions for the Silver Arrows, making it eight out of eleven.
The battle for podiums is also dominated by Mercedes and Ferrari - the current world champions lead 14:12 in this category.
Vettel and Valtteri have made the most podium appearances - eight each.
Lewis is close behind in third place on six podiums. In the first eleven grands prix of the year, the Silver Arrows have clocked six fastest race laps - more than any other team - and Lewis was the driver who set them all.
