MS Dhoni has resigned as captain of the Indian limited overs side, after nine years in the top job.
Dhoni will step aside from the role immediately but will be available for selection for India's upcoming one-day series against England.
"On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats," Indian board CEO Rahul Johri said in a statement.
"Under his leadership, the Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket."
Dhoni captained India in 199 ODIs, winning 110 matches and losing 74 and captained the side in 72 Twenty20 Internationals, winning 41 matches and losing 28.
The 35-year-old retired from Test cricket in 2014, but has continued to play limited overs cricket for the past two years.
Dhoni holds the record for the greatest number of matches as captain of an international side across any format with 331.
He is also the only captain in the history of the game to have won the three major ICC trophies; the ODI World Cup, the World Twenty20 and the Champions Trophy.
