Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has reportedly been left angered by the suggestion he may have to reapply for his own job.
Conjecture has continued to surround the Test great's position at the helm of the Australian cricket team, despite forging a World Cup victory and 4-0 Ashes triumph in recent months.
Langer has also received glowing support from key members within the industry, however his playing group are yet to dispute any reason as to why he shouldn't be re-signed.
The 51-year-old's contract with Cricket Australia is set to expire later this year, with a crucial tour of Pakistan adding to the pressure mounting on Langer.
It is likely Langer will remain as coach by then, however a recent meeting with Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley and head of performance Ben Oliver may have turned things pear-shaped.
According toย Fox Sports'ย Tom Morris, Langer was left fuming at the idea of having to compete with other candidates for the senior coaching role as he may be required to reapply for his job.
It is also understood that Langer wasn't keen on the potential offering of a short-term contract extension should he be backed by CA, with the former 105-time Australian Test representative believing his tenure to date warrants a long-term deal.
Reports suggest Langer might lose out on his position altogether should he turn his back on a 12-14 month offer from CA in hope of gaining a prolonged extension.
Langer has been coach for four years, a period which has been both decorated a disastrous for the Australian cricket camp.
โPeople don't seem to believe this, but the absolute truth is before the World Cup and theย Ashes, we all committed to the end of theย Ashes to sit down and have some conversations,โ Langer recently told SEN Mornings.
โIt's been four really big years and it's an all-encompassing job and it's a tough gig โฆ that's just the truth.
โWe all said that we'd sit down after theย Ashes. So in the next little bit, I'm sure those conversations will start to be had.
โThere's plenty to be spoken about.โ
The next two years frame as critical campaigns for Australia, who will again compete in a T20 World Cup and Ashes series, along with a trio of tours to the sub-continent and Tests against South Africa and the West Indies.
Former teammates Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist are among those to have recently supported Langer receiving a contract extension as coach, with a formal decision to be made before mid-year.
