Tim Cahill is reportedly close to signing with A-League club Melbourne City.

The Australian has reported that Cahill's current club, Chinese Super League side, Hangzhou Greentown, is unlikely to take up the option to retain his services for next season and will release the 36-year-old when the local transfer window opens on Monday, meaning City could secure the Socceroos legend's services as early as next week.

It is understood several clubs from China, America and England are also interested in securing Cahill's signature for next season.

The signing would be a major coup for City, who have struggled to attract large crowd numbers despite a successful campaign last season.
