The Erebus of David Reynolds was the quickest car around the Phillip Island Circuit this afternoon when he topped the timesheets in the opening free practice session of the weekend.
While Reynolds finished the session, which was red flagged early in the afternoon after Cameron Waters went off on the wet track, on a high note, it was exactly the opposite for Craig Lowndes, when the front right tyre blew on his Team Vortex contender and sent him into the gravel and eventually into the wall.
Thankfully the Supercar veteran was uninjured in the shunt, however that is a lot more than can be said for his car. The team will now need to work furiously to get the car ready for Craig to jump back into for the second free practice session this afternoon.
Fabian Coulthard's DJR Team Penske contender had a similar issue when he speared off at turn 3, just prior to Lowndes incident. Although it is not yet confirmed, the Kiwi driver thought they too may have had a front tyre failure.
Shane van Gisbergen, who had held top spot until the final minutes of the session, finished second to Reynolds by a mere .001.
