Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz has been handed a three place grid drop for round four of the 2017 Formula One Championship season, the Russian Grand Prix, for his role in knocking the Williams of Lance Stroll out of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday evening.
On lap 13 of the Bahrain Grand Prix, the two came together and both were forced to retire.
The incident was investigated after the race and while each blamed the other, the stewards decided it was Sainz's fault for a very optimistic attempt to overtake the Williams after he came out of the pits. Stroll was on the racing line when Sainz re-joined the track and as a result, the two collided.
The stewards also awarded Sainz two more penalty points for his role in the incident, bringing his total to 7 in the last 12 month period.
