Reigning series champion Shane van Gisbergen had a day to forget at Phillip Island on Sunday when in the second 250 km race of the weekend all fell apart when his Red Bull Holden suffered a rear right tyre failure.
Procedures were put into place prior to race 6 of the championship to try and avoid the tyre failures that littered Saturday's opening race, however it wasn't enough to stop his right rear from shredding, causing massive damage to the rear bodywork of his car as he tried to get it back to the pits in one piece.
As a result, he finished way down the order and his lead at the front of the championship standings diminished.
"Not a very good day again. The race was all about tyres. It was looking really good until we had a tyre blowout. I am not too sure on what happened. Our car felt great, and we were really safe on the tyre yesterday, but today for whatever reason was different. It's a tough one, a shame, we dropped a long way back and ended up in 16th position. We have obviously got some work to do before heading to Perth."
