Shane van Gisbergen set the fastest lap time ever recorded around the Barbagello Raceway this afternoon as the completion between the front runners became extremely fierce in the dying minutes of FP2.
The reigning series champion set a blistering time of 54.77 to finish just .01 ahead of second placed man, Fabian Coulthard.
The times tumbled in the final five minutes, so much so that Scott McLaughlin, who was at the top of the leaderboard with five minutes left on the clock, ended up in 12th place.
The reason for van Gisbergen's blistering pace was put down to the new tyres put on for his final run…
"That's the name of our game, we're always limited on tyres,” he told the sports official website. “Feeling it out all day and the cars felt terrible but we kept working hard and chipping away and bolt a new set on and find two seconds amazingly. The car feels and hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow."
Jamie Whincup was third overall followed by Mark Winterbottom, Chaz Mostert, Craig Lowndes, Cameron Waters, Will Davison, Todd Kelly and Rick Kelly.
