Born in Englewood, Chicago, Rose was the first pick in the 2008 draft, selected by the Bulls.
The Memphis University product was a dynamic player from the get-go, winning the 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year award in his debut season.
Two years later, in 2011, Rose became the youngest MVP in history at the young age of 22. He led the Bulls to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, averaging 25 points and seven assists per game.
During the first four years of his career, his accomplishments grew, and he was recognised as a three-time All-Star and an All-NBA First Team honouree.
Rose was set to be one of the all-time greats until the cruel reality of injuries hit. In the Bulls' first playoff game in 2012, Rose went down with a torn ACL, which left the NBA world devastated.
Rose was never able to fully recapture what he did in his MVP year due to ongoing health issues. He had multiple knee meniscus tears and also dealt with serious hip issues.
Despite being plagued by injuries, Rose persevered, playing for 15 years and coming close to winning Sixth Man of the Year multiple times.
The basketball world watched on as Rose famously turned back the clock in 2018, dropping a career-high 50 points for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He then captured the fans' hearts in an amazing post-game interview, where he broke down in tears, causing one of the most heartfelt moments in NBA history.

Derrick Rose is one of the bigger 'what if' players in the history of basketball, but he was still able to grind out an extraordinary career despite the hurdles he faced, which is why he is so widely loved among fans.
His jersey will now join Bulls legends Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Bob Love and Jerry Sloan's in the rafters.
