The Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic has officially signed a three-year contract extension worth $165 million, including a player option in 2028, reports ESPN's Shams Charania.

This extension now makes him eligible for a projected five-year $417 million contract in 2028.

After being traded from Dallas last season, six months ago, there were questions about whether Doncic wanted to be in Los Angeles long term, but the 26-year-old has stayed loyal to the Lakers, declaring, "I wanted to be here."

Doncic had an up-and-down season in LA after his unexpected trade. However, the five-time All-NBA player now looks to be gearing up to get back to his best.

After being perceived as a player with a lack of conditioning, Doncic looks to be working harder than ever, which is a scary prospect for the league. According to Men's Health, Andrew Heffernan and Ebenezer Samuel, the Lakers star seems to be in his "best shape ever".

Doncic has been active recruiting players to the Lakers this offseason, as he has been a major factor in acquiring former No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton and former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart to the squad.

The Slovenian star's goal is to win an NBA Championship, especially after being so close in 2024, when the Mavericks lost the NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics in five games.

"We have what we need to compete for a championship," Doncic told the Los Angeles media upon re-signing.

Doncic has been a star since joining the NBA in 2018 from Real Madrid. He has already accomplished so much, winning the 2019 Rookie of the Year, being named to five All-NBA first teams, receiving five All-Star nods, and being voted in the top five of the NBA MVP Award three times.

With career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game at a very efficient rate, he is already one of the most skilled offensive players the game has ever seen.

The Los Angeles Lakers plan to make Doncic the face of the team's future, pivoting from LeBron James, who was conspicuously absent from the extension announcement. At least for the next three years, Doncic isn't going anywhere.
